Durbanville Winemakers to Host Exclusive Tasting in Sandton

It’s fitting that headline Sandton restaurant and bar Zioux – host of a special tasting of wines from the Durbanville Wine Valley on September 5 – declares that ‘we are all prisoners of our own minds…break free!’ This wine event certainly promises to do just that: expand the horizons of all wine-curious who sign up to participate.

On offer will be top-flight South African winemakers showcasing some 30 wines for tasting with canapés as well as an exclusive masterclass in Sauvignon Blanc – a variety for which Durbanville Wine Valley is most awarded. Here is the opportunity to discover what makes the Durbanville Wine Valley as successful as it is in producing world-class wines.

Represented will be some of the country’s most renowned wineries: De Grendel, Durbanville Hills, Bloemendal, D’Aria, Groot Phesantekraal, Nitida, Klein Roosboom, Meerendal, Diemersdal and Maastricht. A handful of them will go on to present the exclusive masterclass with six wines paired with small bites. The masterclass is limited to 19 participants only, so booking sooner rather than later is advised.

The location for the tasting makes the event a highlight too. Zioux was conceived by chef entrepreneur David Higgs and the team behind the award- winning Marble and Saint restaurants – Dino Constantino and Gary and interior designer Irene Kyriacou. It opened in 2021 near its sister venues.

More about Durbanville

Cool climate diversity and multi-generational know-how lies at the heart of Durbanville Wine Valley’s excellence. The vineyards just north of Cape Town have thrived here since 1698 with their success underscored by a diversity of soil types, climatic conditions, and aspects. Mists and oceanic breezes ensure lower-than-average temperatures that promote slow ripening and intense flavour development, especially in Sauvignon Blanc.

Its wines are consistently recognised. In 2022, every single one of the 13 wineries in the region graced the podiums of leading wine shows including the FNB Sauvignon Blanc Top 10, Veritas, the Amorim Cap Classique Challenge, the Decanter World Wine Awards, the Trophy Wine Show, and the Michelangelo International  Wine & Spirits Awards.

In shining a light on the Durbanville Wine Valley in Johannesburg in September, the wine region will also host a media luncheon at chef Darren O’Donovan’s Embarc Restaurant in Parkhurst on September 6, followed by a dinner and wine tasting on the same day in Pretoria at Forti Too. The latter, owned by well-known restaurateur Fortunato Mazzone, will be for 50 of his VIP guests exclusively.

Durbanville wines are available for sale directly from the wineries’ websites.
