Oceans of Inspiration

The Save Our Seas Foundation Shark Education Centre in Kalk Bay is all about sharing the wonders of the ocean with learners from visiting schools so they can become conservation champions!
You might have noticed the eye-catching shark sculpture outside Save our Seas Foundation (SOSF) Shark Education Centre on the main road, but do you know what goes on inside? Featuring exhibits that allow young people to learn about marine life through play and exploration, the SOSF Shark Education Centre teaches learners about sharks’ diversity, role in the ocean and habitat, as well as the marine ecosystem around False Bay.

Not only does the Centre use the exhibits within its four walls to inspire and educate learners, but learning activities also take place in the field, such as at Dalebrook Beach. In addition to its school visits, the Centre also holds outreach events and long-term after-school programmes – all in the name of spreading ocean awareness.

“Most of our target audience do not have much experience with the sea and the life within, and don’t even realise that there are animals living on the rocky shore,” says Clova Mabin from the SOSF Shark Education Centre “There’s also a great fear of sharks and very little understanding of the threats that sharks and all ocean life faces. That’s why we are passionate about what we do, especially our longer-term programmes.”

Healthy Ocean, Healthy World

Working with children over a longer period naturally has a deeper impact, says Clova, and helps the SOSF Shark Education Centre to nurture a true and long-lasting connection with the ocean. “We all depend on the ocean for life. Between 50%-80% of the oxygen we breathe is made in the ocean, so if we don’t look after it, we are all going to be affected,” she says.

Scottish-born Clova moved to SA in 2005 to work with sharks and completed her MSc in Conservation Biology at UCT and a PhD in Zoology at the University of Stellenbosch. She joined the SOSF Shark Education Centre in 2019 as the Centre Director, commenting “I have always been interested in giving back to the environment, teaching and science communication – so environmental education, especially one in the marine field, is a dream job.”

Hands-On Exploration

Clova always finds it rewarding to see the faces of learners light up, whether they’re exploring the rocky shore at Dalebrook or snorkelling in the kelp forest as part of the Marine Explorers programme. “To see people fall in love with the ocean and be inspired to protect it, is just beautiful,” she says. “I love working with older learners and young adults to discuss complex issues and work together, building life skills that will ultimately help conserve the oceans. I’m very luck to work with a wonderful team who come to work each day ready to inspire others.”
