uVuyo Music and Dance in Motion show

uVuyo Music and Dance in Motion

The South African College of Music and the Centre for Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies at the University of Cape Town collaborate to bring you a one night only show, titled uVuyo – Music and Dance in Motion.

With a diverse range of dance styles, the show promises cross-continental connections with high energy vibrant performances of Spanish, Indian and African dance and music styles.

The concert takes place on Tuesday, 6 August, 2024, at 7pm in the Baxter Concert Hall. Tickets are available via Webtickets for R150 (full price), R100 (pensioners 60+), R50 (scholars) and UCT students are offered free entry subject to availability.

Flamenco dance company

The Spanish music and dance is presented by Tierra Flamenca, a professional flamenco dance company based in Cape Town. Dancers include Demi Johnson, Julia de Rosenwerth, Dawn Jackson, Leilani Beer, Michele Wentworth, Samantha Valentine, Shae Behari-Leak, Ché Adams with music by guitarist Bienyameen Camroodien.

An exciting inclusion is that of the South Indian Classical Dance form, Bharathanatyam, that showcases a phenomenal fusion of vibrancy, rhythm and energy. Saranya Devan, a trained Bharathanatyam dancer and choreographer will present a solo item.

Devan has choreographed a special group Bharathanatyam item with students from the Centre for Theatre, Dance and Performance studies who will combine hand movements, neck and head movements, facial expressions, foot movements, and colourful costumes, to create a fusion of dance and theatre.

African dance will explore the lyrical narratives that are navigated by African music and attempt to embody the story lines. Most dance pieces will be focusing on the perfect marriage that is created through constructive collaboration and commonalities between African music and its dances. African dance movement aesthetics will be part of the performance in an extravaganza showcase.

uVuyo invites us to share in a future vision of the performing arts at UCT that is rich with enterprise, potential and the power of diversity.

The production is choreographed and directed by Maxwell Rani, Lisa Wilson, with musical direction by Dizu Plaatjies, Bronwen Clacherty and Rick Deja.
