Immerse yourself

spending time by the sea
If you love spending time by the sea, in the sea and under the sea, why not enhance your experience with these courses?

Lifeguard | Big Bay Lifesaving

Lifeguarding naturally requires a high level of fitness, skill and compassion – and of course you’ll have to study, train and complete the lifeguard award before you’re able to don the coveted red shorts. However, if you’re passionate about giving back to the community and spending time in the place that you love, why not embark on a lifeguard course with Big Bay Lifesaving? The course takes between 8 – 12 weeks, every Sunday from 09:00 to 13:00, and will prepare you for completing the Junior and Senior Lifeguard Awards.

Work on a Yacht | Ocean Star Sailing

If you’re a fan of Below Deck, you might dream about summers in the Med spent working aboard a superyacht as a steward, deckhand or chef! Did you know that Cape Town has its very own sailing academy? Ocean Star Sailing is based at the V&A Waterfront and offers a variety of practical and theoretical courses that will equip you for life at sea, whether you’ll be interior or exterior. From safety and skipper courses to mixology, silver service and food hygiene courses, the comprehensive programmes cover everything you need to know and give you an internationally-recognised qualification.

SCUBA Dive | Pisces Divers

Discover the beautiful world beneath the waves when you learn how to SCUBA dive! You’ll need to get your PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certification first, though, but once complete you’ll be able to dive anywhere in the world. Pisces Divers offers an open water course that takes four days and is open to anyone over 10 years of age that has adequate swimming skills and is in good physical health. The course includes training in the on-site pool, dives at a local training beach as well as at some of Cape Town’s most amazing dive sites.

Forage from Rock Pools | Veld and Sea

One of the best ways to appreciate the ocean is through a coastal foraging course, where you’ll take to the rock pools of Scarborough for the day. On the course offered by Veld and Sea, you’ll be guided through gathering mussels and the edible seaweeds that one can harvest from the pools, and how to safely remove them without damaging the delicate marine ecosystem. Once your basket is full, you’ll return to the Veld and Sea kitchens to prepare lunch, learning firsthand how to create a delicious meal from the collected goodies.

Surf | Cape Town Surf School

If you wistfully watch others riding the waves when you’re at the beach, maybe now’s the year to learn how to do it yourself? Visit the Cape Town Surf School in Blouberg for surf lessons from the experts – either one-on-one or in a group – where you’ll also be able to rent wetsuits and boards and can try the sport on for size before committing to your own gear. Single lessons of 90 minutes are available as well as packages, and they’re ideal for beginners as well as advanced surfers looking to improve their technique.
